S.T.D. is proud to announce two female Berlin based solo artists/producers whom are at the front of pushing the envelope of sound and songwriting. Although their styles differ from one another, Heidi Mortenson and Jasmina Maschina are at the forefront of creating music which simply defy the constitutional boundaries of music. Between them, they share an array of diverse styles and themes from acoustic, pop, beatboxing, ambient electronica, loop sampling and vocal improvisation. They will play together in Shanghai’s favourite alternative hub - LOgO, and will be supported by DJs R3, Adept and Lin Feng.
HEIDI MORTENSON (DENMARK/BERLIN – Wired Records)
http://www.myspace.com/heidimortenson
Heidi Mortenson grew up listening to the metallic sounds of her dad fixing cars in the garage and her mum playing the organ. She began experimenting with recording herself singing inside a washing machine, rebuilding a telephone receiver into a microphone and hooking up with a walkie-talkie system. Since her childhood beginnings, Heidi has toured extensively within Europe and in Canada and the USA with two album releases.
Heidi’s music is described as colorful and textured soulfull electronics. Approached with a nerdytorial daze her songs space travel and land on a planet of their own. Add emotional drive, street credit and spirit of vintage cartoon. As a onewomanband Heidi is an entertaining entity with surprices and tricks up her sleeve. Her performance consists of live sampling, beatbox and singing, building up the music by her vocal abilities. Sultry, silly, soulful and playful.
PRESS QUOTES
‘”She’s in the tradition of Laurie Anderson or Grace Jones. If Grace Jones built her own synthesizers” Popmatters ??
“If Madonna really wants to start pushing popular music into new areas she should forget working with established American production talents like Timbaland and give this mad Dane a call” The Telegraph UK ??
‘”Denmark gets to know their electronic first lady. Heidi takes the listener through Europe’s metropoles where she and her surroundings attack love through fierce desire and slighty sexual insanity. A musical span of international class’” Undertoner ??
‘”Mortenson’s idea of girrl-pop would give Christina Aguilera nightmares’” Popmatters ??
‘”Who else has managed to record an album which sounds like a cross between someone fiddling around with a dodgy radio while simultaneously pouring milk onto Rice Crispies… AND still sound good !!?’” Electronic Beatz ??
‘”..in a musical field of excitement between CocoRosie and Autechre. And Heidi Mortenson surely has listened to PJ Harvey and probably also disposes over a solid collection of electro records’” Gaffa ??
‘Musically, it’s a cacophony of machines, electro-pulses, and static that Mortenson just barely has under control’ Popmatters ??
“Heidi Mortenson is nothing short of a genius.. and I don’t use the word genius lightly” Electronic Beatz ??
“Overall probably the best concert of this year’s SPOT festival 2008 and musically absolutely the bravest” Geiger
JASMINA MASCHINA (AUS/BERLIN)
http://www.myspace.com/jasminemaschine
Jasmina Maschina is Jasmine Guffond, one half of the experimental electronic duo Minit (staubgold/sigma editions). Jasmina composed, recorded and produced her debut solo Jasmina Maschina album ‘The Demolition Series’ in her Berlin homes. Melding the most simple and innocent chord progressions of time-honoured folk music with a noisenik’s attraction to repetition, drone and inventiveness to create the sensation of paresthesia, tingling on both the skin and mind. ‘The Demolition Series’ was released on cd/vinyl on the Staubgold label in 2008. March 2010 brings a split LP release with Golden Diskó Ship on Monika Enterprise.
Live, Jasmina performs hauntingly beautiful variations of her songs. Fragile layers of sound swirling magnificently around your ears, each song based on her personal style of gentle guitar picking, yet at any moment capable of interrupting into intoxicating noise, seducing you into her wonderful atmosphere.
PRESS QUOTES
“Her brand of folk is classic and consists of soft harmonic ballads, yet she is not easily classifiable; another pulsating, hypnotic layer is always present” Clarissa Lempp, Live Review, Trompete Berlin 20.4.07
“Superb debut album of beautiful folk guitar music from Berlin-based Macshina, better known perhaps as one half of experimental electronic outfit Minit. This is straight-ahead folk filtered through an imaginative electro-prism that knocks Cat Power into a cocked hat.” Dominic Al-Badri - Kansai Time Out
‘As the album develops, Maschina’s history with Minit manifests itself; that group’s affinity for repetition, drone, and alterations of a pygmy sort informs and strengthens these songs. Inasmuch as these inclinations refresh the timbral palette, they also affirm a consistency of tone that pays off handsomely. In setting off on this path and discovering something so deeply personal, Maschina has accessed a sublime form that is well beyond herself.’
