We’ve watched a new Beijing Rock band blossom into the scene with Oliver, A troop of Canadians providing us with Punk of the highest quality…THEN we had Pitchtuner and the STDJs playing to a PACKED LOgO until 7am! Welllllll lets see if our feet have one more night out left in them…

After 450 live shows around the world, the Berlin based groove heroes Pitchtuner are finally coming to Shanghai. In January 2009, Pitchtuner released their critically acclaimed third album. “Riding the Fire“. Produced by one of Germany´s most sought after producers Moses Schneider (Beatsteaks, Tocotronic, Mediengruppe Telekommander etc.), the album is a danceable four to the floor amalgam of sounds, combining catchy pop melodies ridden by dribblingly funky guitars, and infectious beats. Praised by critics as smart and naive, hard and mellow, refreshingly grooving and just plain fun, Pitchtuner has played with the likes of Peaches and Soulwax in festivals around the world.

Last autumn a collaboration started between Beijing´s own Helen Feng – lead singer for popular bands Pet Conspiracy and Ziyo – and Pitchtuner frontman Johannes Marx (Hannes). Helen was on tour in Europe with her band Pet Conspiracy and after a few nights crashing at Johannes studio, the two decided to strike up a collaboration. This collaboration has led Johannes to Shanghai on Pitchtuner´s first China Tour. Hannes will be bringing both Pitchtuner’s own brand of Berlin electro pop along with the music that was churned out in the studio with Helen last autum. The world debut of these new tracks will be performed by both Johannes and Helen for the first time on this tour. Support provided from Shanghai’s favorite electrorock/electropunk DJs - STDJs including R3, Adept, The Dynamic…and for the first time on the other side of the LOgO desk…Linfeng (Banana Monkey bass player!!)

Your one night stop to dance floor madness. Don’t miss this chance to dance into the electronic abyss for the price of a beer… Come unprotected

flyer-std-fuckedup.jpg

Fucked Up formed in Toronto in 2002, high-school friends influenced by first- and second-wave hardcore bands like Minor Threat and NOFX. It was instantly apparent that they were not carbon-copy punks.

Known by bizarre aliases, Fucked Up employ creative methods of spreading information & misinformation, spurning MySpace and a band website in favor of Wikipedia and an oblique blog. Basic facts are constantly in flux. A guru-like manager named David Eliade shares the same last name as a controversial Romanian philosopher, and allegedly taught 10,000 Marbles how to garden. It is unclear how many of their 7″s have actually been released. Rumors about Fucked Up circulate like wildfire among their obsessive fans.

Some things nonetheless became clear during the course of the band’s early existence. Their musical influences are varied and deep: singer Pink Eyes’ record collection is one of the more noteworthy assemblages of independent vinyl in Canada. The band has a deep affection for twee English pop, while the live shows are theatrical events where it’s not uncommon to find a half-naked, bleeding Pink Eyes prowling the audience. Fans caused thousands of dollars of damage at MTV Canada’s studios during a performance of the appropriately titled “Baiting The Public.” Attention follows Fucked Up like a sick puppy, whether from a midnight bridge concert at SXSW that turned into a police riot, or a 12 hour gig in a store window.

Fucked Up have not only taken over the Punk scene through their own methods, but are quickly being crowned the saviors of an emo ridden, commercialized, manufactured and spat out Punk scene. They have reinvented Punk and will be associated in a small band of artists which have been true to their music and aspirations and not losing their way through a gauntlet of commercialism and black hair dye. But calling them just a “Punk” band is really not doing Fucked Up any justice. One Fucked Up song can find itself spanning over a variety of genres from eerie post-hardcore to brawling Rock vibes, weaving you through a myriad of sounds and emotions before leaving you in a humbled state thinking to yourself “that was fucking rad”. Pack your helmets, dust off your Doc Martins and brace yourself for what will be the Punk Rock show of a lifetime as S.T.D. welcomes Fucked Up to Shanghai.

Supported by local Chinese heroes Crazy Mushroom and after party provided by STDJs.

Well herrow there Shanghai…what a year this giant ox is shaping up to be! Scams, scandals, disasters, Obamas and THE NEW TRANSFORMERS MOVIE! Times are changing, ice caps are melting and the doom and gloom of the apocalypse is creeping nearer.

WELL BALLS TO THAT

We’re backkkkkk!!!! The return of your friendly neighbourhood rock shows are back! and in the swing of things and my, my Shanghai have we got some juicy stuff for you. Let’s start with our season opener.

Oliver (BJ)

So after many a trips to Beijing and many a gigs seen and heard, one band has stood out not only to us but to a guy named Howie B. You may know Howie B from his work with Bjork and Tricky. Well Howie is now working alongside Oliver for their upcoming album. Oliver can be summed up as a brit-pop/indie band influenced by bands like The Kinks and Led Zepplin. With a keen sense for big hooks and strong, driven vocal melodies, Oliver deliver their own unique sound in the mix of Chinese rock which is certain to be adored by the masses.

Oliver will be joined by our very own Banana Monkey who will be making their long awaited return to LOgO. Opening the night will be The Rovers, with their second appearance for S.T.D.. If you haven’t heard of them before…they are a Chinese Led Zepplin tribute band…and they rocked the hell out of everyone last time, succumbing to encores and turning the most doubtful skeptic into an elated pile of sweat.

Closing the night will be electropunk/dancerock/dirty disco grindilicious STDJs - R3 and Adept.

Walls be shaking, Bonez ‘a’ Breakin and plenty a Booty to be Shakin this night, so pop in and celebrate the return of quality live music in our neighbourhood.
