LOgO Shanghai

Favorite records

Every month an activist of Shanghai’s music scene
is picking up the record that blasted his ears within the past few months

Gift gift and gift

Lil ones !

The record of the month is back with a supa nice one :
We are lucky to have Mister Blaise Deville’s contribution !

There’s been tons of discussions lately on wheteher-being-a-DJ-even-means-anything-VS-being-a-producer-so-show-me-what-you-got-?- blah blah
2 points :
- Blaise is this talented guy we are lucky to have in town.
- Technical skills, huge passion for discovery, amazing music collection + Deep Tendency to be Genuinely Generous, that’s where Blaise is.

So when it’s about releasing a mixtape, while some guys are putting quickly made stuff for sale all over the internet, Blaise brings his CD and puts it on the shelf, for free, at your favorite coffee spot. How cool is that ?

I picked mine at my “Ni hao, I am an expat, I am lost but I like to say ni hao, I even can write it for you if you like” internet cafe.

Here it is :

(  www.myspace.com/blaisedeville / The sleeve pic is by 6co. )

I won’t talk about his mix cos that’s difficult for me and it’s someone else’s job, but :

Sure thing is, one of the most delightful part of this week was to

walk   home   and    press    play…
… and start again when it’s over.

Now, if you don’t know where your fav expat coffee is, you can come by LOgO tonite, there will be a few ones dropped before the HUH? party gets started.

Oh yes, which record of the month for January 2010 ?

Blaise picked three, saying I could choose and keep two for the next time.

- The XX, XX
- Antipop Consortium, Fluorescent Black
- King Midas Sound, Waiting For You

So here is a very smart collage of the three of them.

Hi hi hi rainy summer Shanghai !!

You know them, they are two crazy kids with a robot friend, sometimes dressed as animals, they design their flyers in the bus to school with a fat pen on a used page of gambol notebook.

They carry happiness and tons of tunes wherever they go, so we can dance, rap, jump, badbreakdance, slurp baijiu, too much baijiu, too much dance, too much jump… rap! baijiu!

Maumau and Heatwolves are playing in LOgO tonite, if you haven’t experienced their set yet, do a nice favor to your body and soul.

All you have to do is step outside, grab a taxi and scream xingfulu fahuazhen lu. Then EVERYthing will be just fine.

Crazy and fine.

Time to ask Mau Mau what special record he’d love to share with us a the moment.
Definitely love his pick, please find it, and listen…

record-dosh-wolves_and_wishes.jpg

Dosh - Wolves and wishes
(martin luther king chavez) dosh is a percussion mastermind from minnesota who makes gloriously strange music out of a sampler and all the instruments he has lying around. he’s been touring with andrew bird for a while, who has guest credits on Wolves and Wishes

this is dosh’s fourth album, and the tracks have a more melodic, jazzier upbeat style than previous efforts, which pushed more towards spaced-out glitch. things are still chopped and rearranged in bizarre and happy ways, though, and i’d put the whole thing on a level with his previous best, Pure Trash

2 intense pleasures of listening to dosh: one = unpredictability… for someone who spends a lot of time listening to formulaic dance music, it’s some kind of island vacation to hear something that takes all sorts of unanticipated turns, stutter-steps and sudden explosions, in ways that still build towards one big sound. in one interview, talking about his jamming/sampling habits, he says that it’s often the mistakes in recording sessions that he finds most interesting, will chop out and loop up and layer over.

two = the sheer range of different noises he works with and recombines — each album is like the sounds of a different country — though somehow you can always still tell it’s dosh.

i give it twelve bottles of baijiu.

dosh releases records on anticon, a fantastic label from san francisco: http://www.anticon.com

Hi everybody !!

So the question a lot of people were having in mind recently :

What the hell The Incredible Sacco - you know, that guy that can turn any kind of party into a real madness - can actually be listening to while hanging his laundry at home ?

Well, we asked him

Here’s what he has to say :

record-human-highway_0.jpg

Human Highway - Moody Motorcyle

Opening with a swatch of lo-fi backwoods guitar, the duo merely jests withthe antiquated before smoothing everything over with a sheen of crisp production. A spring in its step, “The Sound” bops along, oblivious to the

lack of substance in its lyrics. Instead, Nick and Jim smile incessantly over marimba pomp and their own enthused harmony. When things get heavier on the album’s title track, they stick together till the heat blows over.

Guthrie’s shifty-eyed rhythm provides the alibi while Thorburn’s lead paces, planning their escape, “Drove out to the city limits… No one will ever find me here.” Bitter and confrontational, the short strums suggest

this isn’t their first time on the run.

Gleefully saying nothing, or reluctantly loose-lipped, the pair excel when engaged in emotional extremes, but falter when indecisively waltzing around overslept mornings and evening apathy.

Hi everybody !!

Here is the perfect record for this insolent sunny december Shanghai is offering us

Aids Wolf - Cities of Glass

record-aidswolf-cog.jpg

Released Sept. 2008 on Skingraft Records / Lovepump United

Aids Wolf are a Montreal-based antisocial noise-rock band. Two of their members are behind the award-winning Seripop printing studio. This is their second LP.

Cities of Glass is a difficult record to recommend.

It runs the gamut from merely irritating (at it’s mildest) to physically agonizing when in full swing.

Despite this, there is an extremely engaging quality to their sound and you can’t help but be drawn into their dark little corner of dissonant guitars and asymmetrical rhythm.

Don’t let this newfound accessibility fool you, Aids Wolf haven’t softened since their last LP The Lovvers.

If anything, they’ve only redoubled their efforts and are coming harder than ever.

The group has strengthened their resolve and the sincerity with which they deliver is half the appeal.

record-aids-wolf_myspace.jpg

Aids Wolf endeavor to live their lives by a series of principals, blurring the lines between art and lifestyle and directing their output.

Principal 3 states:
‘If you can’t convert ‘em, make ‘em run crying and holding their ears.
There is no shame in being a bummer.
To elicit a reaction - positive or negative - is a valueless proposition and a noble pursuit in its own right’.

After hearing this record I agree wholeheartedly.

Hi everybody !!

Here is the record for our wet november picked up by
DJ Tootekool this morning :

record-krill-mimima-nautica.jpg

krill.minima - nautica [Native State Records - NSCD007]

krill.minima is the ambient project of Martin Juhls, a German kid from Dortmund.

This project is all about the idea of mixing warmth, emotion and pop-appeal with exotic and experimental sounds, modern soundhack, clicking rhythms and ambient constructions.

Martin has been influenced by timeless composers like Brian Eno, Erik Satie, Steve Reich, Stockhausen and Pierre Henry, as well as by the work of some modern sound innovators called Sonic Youth, Autechre, Aphex Twin, or Alva Noto.

The famous quote “Everything I hear is available material” by Pierre Henry is very close to Martins procedure of making his ambient music.
Most of his rhythm sounds are based on ordinary and non ordinary noises which he recorded in his living room.

krill-minima.jpg

Mostly when I start producing a new track or project I have a clear soundpicture, emotion and atmosphere in mind which I want to make hearable. Then I start collecting the sounds, chords and fragements which I think could work to create a comparable acoustic surrounding.
